How to Get to Ijen Crater and See the Blue Fire

Mount Ijen where the Ijen Crater lies located in Banyuwangi Regency, East Java. You only need to take a ferry from Bali to get to the city. The ferry will depart from Gilimanuk Harbor, Bali, and the ticket is about 6,500 IDR. There will be a ferry every 45 minutes that will take you from the port to Banyuwangi. The journey will take about 45 minutes each time. But, if you are already in cities in East Java such as Probolinggo, Malang, you can reach Banyuwangi simply by driving a car, take a train, or bus. From Banyuwangi, you can manage to join a travel agent to help you arrange your visit to Mount Ijen. There will be a lot of homestays you can find in the villages nearby the mount.

Best Time to See the Blue Flame

Just like the other regions in Indonesia, Banyuwangi also has two seasons, they are dry season and rainy season. The best time to travel Kawah Ijen blue fire is between April and October when the region enters the dry season.

Meanwhile, visiting the Ijen Crater in the rainy season (between November and March), will be a bit risky. This is because the intensity of rain is relatively high and that makes the path to the crater becomes muddy and slippery. To get the best view of the blue flame, you need to hike to the Ijen Crater just before sunrise. This is important for you to start early since it takes about 90 to 120 minutes to allow you to reach the crater’s viewpoint. Make sure to start your journey to the blue flame location 2 hours before sunrise at minimum, but earlier is better.

What to Prepare

Hiking to the Ijen Crater is quite challenging, especially for you who never climb any mountain before. To minimize any issues when climbing the Mount Ijen, make sure that you wear comfortable shoes with good grips, such as sneakers. The temperature is quite chilly on the top of the mountain, so wear your jacket and a comfortable T-shirt under it.

Don’t forget to bring a lot of water to help you avoid dehydration during the trip. This will also very helpful to bring gas masks since the Ijen Crater lake is highly acidic. Since the lake is also sulphuric, it will be better for you to put off all jewelry made of silver. This is because the silver will turn dark once it reacts with sulfur. Make sure that you also bring some food for the journey since you will not find any food stalls on the way up to travel Kawah Ijen blue fire.
