You will need about 5 hours to reach Tumpak Sewu from Surabaya, the capital city of East Java by car. But, it will take only a couple of hours to drive from Malang, one of the main cities in the province. Half the journey from the city is a winding road up. Not only that but you will also pass down mountain ridges and through small villages when driving from Malang. However, you need to be careful since the traffics can be a bit stressful for you to drive. You will find a lot of trucks carrying heavy loads passing through the route. So, make sure that you carefully drive and keep concentrating to avoid an accident.
When to Visit Tumpak Sewu
The best time to visit Tumpak Sewu Semeru is from April to October. This is the time when Indonesia enters the dry season. The weather will usually nice with a lot of sunshine and the view around the waterfall is jaw-dropping during the season. However, make sure to bring supplies such as foods and waters since the temperature can be a bit high during the dry season. Avoid visiting the waterfall from November to March since the country enters the rainy season. During the season, rains drop almost every day and the path can be very slippery. Tumpak Sewu is open daily from 8 am to 7 pm. If you want to enjoy a quieter and more comfortable visit, you can come to the waterfall on weekdays since it is a bit crowded on the weekend. The entrance fee is quite cheap. You only need to pay about 10,000 IDR or less than $1 (75 cents USD) to enter the tourist spot. Keep in mind to bring small bills since you are expected to pay when you want to use the bathroom in the tourist area.
